Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document is a commencement proclamation—essentially the legal 'start button' for part of a law.

What it does:

Activates Schedule 1 of the Migration Amendment (Protection of Identifying Information) Act 2009
Sets 14 September 2009 as the date those amendments become legally effective

Why it exists: Australian Acts often don't start automatically when passed by Parliament. The Governor-General issues proclamations to fix specific commencement dates. This one was signed on 12 August 2009, giving about a month's notice before the privacy protections in Schedule 1 took effect.

Important note: This document does not contain the actual rules about protecting identifying information (such as privacy safeguards or disclosure restrictions). It only sets the calendar date when those substantive rules (located in Schedule 1 of the Amendment Act) came into force.
