Schedule 3 — Requirements for safes

1. Requirements for small safe
The requirements for a small safe are set out in the Table.

| **Cabinet/body** | Must be made from solid steel plate at least 10 mm thick or a steel skin with concrete fill at least 50 mm thick<br>All joints must be continuously welded |
| **Door** | Must be made from solid steel plate at least 10 mm thick or a steel skin with concrete fill at least 50 mm thick<br>Must be fitted flush to the cabinet/body with a maximum clearance of 1.5 mm when closed<br>Hinge system must be a system that does not allow the door to be opened if the hinge is removed |
| **Lock** | Must be a 6 lever key lock or a 4 wheel combination lock or a digital lock that provides security that is equivalent to a 6 lever key lock or 4 wheel combination lock |
| **Mounting** | Must be mounted on a concrete floor or a brick or concrete wall with at least 4 expanding bolts of at least 12 mm in diameter<br>If mounting on a concrete floor or a brick or concrete wall is not possible must be securely mounted on structural elements of the building such as studs or floor joists |
2. Requirements for large safe
The requirements for a large safe are set out in the Table.

| **Mounting** | Must be mounted on a concrete floor with an expanding bolt with a diameter of at least 16 mm unless the safe weighs more than 1 tonne |
| **Installation** | Must be installed by a person licensed under the *Security and Related Activities (Control) Act 1996* to install safes |
| **Weight** | Must have a minimum weight of 250 kg |
