This determination sets the annual registration fee that marriage celebrants must pay to the federal government to keep their legal authority to conduct weddings.

Who pays: Anyone registered as a marriage celebrant in Australia (including civil celebrants and religious ministers authorised to solemnise marriages). You must pay this every financial year to stay on the register.

How much:

$240 for the full year (if already registered on 1 July)
Pro-rata (partial year) fees if you register mid-year:
- July–September: $240
- October–December: $180
- January–March: $120
- April–June: $60

Why it matters: If a celebrant doesn't pay this charge, they can be deregistered and will no longer have legal authority to marry people.

1 Name of determination

This determination is the Marriage (Celebrant Registration Charge) Determination 2014.

2 Commencement

This determination commences on 1 July 2014.

3 Authority

This determination is made under subsection 7(1) of the Marriage (Celebrant Registration Charge) Act 2014.

4 Celebrant registration charge

For subsection 7(1) of the Marriage (Celebrant Registration Charge) Act 2014, the amount of celebrant registration charge payable by a person in respect of a financial year is:

(a) if the person is a marriage celebrant on 1 July in a financial year—$240; or

(b) if the person becomes a marriage celebrant after 1 July in a financial year—the amount specified in the item in the following table that relates to the period in the year in which the person becomes a marriage celebrant.
