Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This proclamation lets Australian diplomatic officers (ambassadors, consuls) solemnize legally recognized marriages at embassy or consulate premises in 13 overseas countries where local laws can prevent Australians from marrying.

It affects Australian citizens living in or visiting those countries — including Belgium, Bulgaria, Taiwan, Czechoslovakia, Ethiopia, France, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Portugal, Spain, Thailand, and South Vietnam — by providing an alternate legal route to marry when local marriage laws pose barriers.
