Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document formally approves a heritage management plan for Mawson Station — Australia's first permanent Antarctic research base — under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act).

What it does:

Authorises a five-year plan to protect the Commonwealth Heritage values (the historical and cultural significance) of the station
Gives legal effect to management guidelines that balance ongoing scientific operations with conservation of heritage buildings and artefacts
Empowers the Australian Antarctic Division to manage the site according to the approved plan

Why it matters: Mawson Station contains heritage-listed structures and items from decades of Antarctic research. This instrument ensures those heritage values are legally protected under national environmental law while the station continues as an active scientific base. It essentially says: 'This is the official rulebook for looking after the place.'
