Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This instrument sets the annual fishing quotas (called "total allowable catch") for the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery, covering the 2014/2015 season.

The catch limits:

Patagonian Toothfish: 410 tonnes maximum
Any other single species: 50 tonnes maximum

Who it affects: Commercial fishing operators holding permits for the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery (located in sub-Antarctic waters south-east of Tasmania).

Why it matters: These hard caps prevent overfishing and help maintain sustainable fish populations. The limits apply strictly from 1 May 2014 to 30 April 2015, after which this determination automatically expires and is replaced by a new annual determination.

Legal basis: The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) issues this under the Fisheries Management Act 1991 and the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery Management Plan 2006.
