Commonwealth legislation
This Act has been repealed and is no longer in force. It is retained for historical reference.
What this does: This Direction sets the rules for how toothfish can be caught in the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery.
The main rule: If you hold fishing rights in this fishery, you can only use trawling (dragging a net through the water). All other fishing methods are banned.
The exception: Scientists with a special scientific permit (issued under section 15 of the Management Plan) can use other fishing methods for research purposes.
Who it affects: Anyone who holds statutory fishing rights in this fishery, plus anyone acting on their behalf (such as crew members or agents).
Duration: It applies for five years from when it commences.
How to read the definitions: If a word isn't defined in this Direction, check the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery Management Plan 2006. If it's not defined there either, check the Fisheries Management Act 1991 (the main Commonwealth fisheries law).
