Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This instrument adds a specific animal to Australia's official endangered species list.

What it does The instrument lists Egernia roomi (a species of skink — a type of lizard) as Critically Endangered under national environmental law. This is the highest threat category available.

Who it affects

The species: It now receives the strongest legal protections under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act)
Land users and developers: Anyone planning activities that could harm this species or its habitat must now seek federal government approval before proceeding
Government: The Minister must prepare a recovery plan and consider the species in all environmental assessments

Why it matters Listing a species as Critically Endangered triggers strict legal protections designed to prevent extinction. It signals that this particular skink faces an extremely high risk of dying out in the wild without immediate conservation intervention.
