Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This instrument sets the maximum amount of money the government can give out in grants during 2016 for the Indigenous Support Programme.

What it does:

Authorises up to $40,149,000 (about $40.15 million) in grants for 2016
The money is specifically for promoting equality of opportunity in higher education for Indigenous students

Who made it:

Senator Nigel Scullion, the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, approved this on 11 August 2015
It is made under the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (specifically section 41-50)

Why it matters: This is essentially the 'budget approval' that allows the government to legally pay grants to universities and other bodies to support Indigenous students accessing and succeeding in higher education. Without this instrument, those specific grant payments could not be made.
