Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This certificate extends the expiry date for Australia's transport safety investigation rules.

Under Australian law, most regulations automatically expire after 10 years through a process called sunsetting (automatic repeal). The Transport Safety Investigation Regulations 2003—which set out how aviation, maritime, and rail incidents are investigated—were scheduled to sunset on 1 April 2020.

This certificate delays that expiry until 1 October 2021, giving the government an extra 18 months to review and remake the regulations before they disappear.

What this means:

Transport safety investigators continue operating under existing rules until October 2021
The public and transport operators face no disruption from sudden regulatory gaps
The certificate automatically deletes itself on 2 October 2021 (the day after the new expiry date)
