Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does:

This certificate delays the automatic expiry ("sunsetting") of the Public Interest Disclosure Standard 2013 by two years.

Background:

Under the Legislation Act 2003, most regulations automatically expire after 10 years unless specifically renewed. This is called "sunsetting." The Public Interest Disclosure Standard—the rulebook governing whistleblowing in the Australian public service—was scheduled to expire on 1 April 2024.

What changes:

The Standard now remains in force until 1 April 2026 (instead of 1 April 2024)
Public sector whistleblower protections continue unchanged during this period
This certificate itself self-destructs on 2 April 2026

Why it matters:

This buys the government time to review the whistleblowing framework while ensuring public officials keep their existing legal protections against retaliation when reporting misconduct.
