Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This certificate gives an extra year of life to the Parliamentary Service Determination 2013 — the document that sets employment conditions (pay, leave, classifications) for staff working in Parliament.

What's happening? Under Australian law, most regulations and determinations automatically expire ("sunset") after 10 years unless they're reviewed and remade. The Parliamentary Service Determination was due to sunset on 1 October 2023.

This certificate pushes that expiry date back to 1 October 2024.

Who does it affect?

Parliamentary Service employees (the staff who support MPs, Senators, and parliamentary committees)
The Parliamentary Service Commissioner who manages these employment arrangements

Why does it matter? Without this certificate, the Determination would have automatically disappeared on 1 October 2023, potentially leaving employment conditions in limbo while a replacement is prepared. This "sunsetting deferral" ensures continuity of employment terms for parliamentary staff while the government completes its review and drafts a new determination.
