Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This certificate extends the life of a 1995 Declaration about Aboriginal land by one year.

Under Australian law, most legislative instruments automatically expire ("sunset") after 10 years unless reviewed. The Declaration of Aboriginal Land from 11 October 1995 was due to sunset on 1 April 2019.

What this certificate does:

Pushes the expiry date back to 1 April 2020 (a 12-month extension)
Gives the government time to review whether the 1995 Declaration should be kept, remade, or allowed to expire permanently

Who it affects:

This is mainly an administrative measure for the government, but it indirectly affects any Aboriginal land interests covered by the original 1995 Declaration, ensuring those arrangements stay valid for another year while the review happens.

Self-destruct clause: This certificate itself disappears on 2 April 2020, the day after the new sunset date takes effect.
