Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This certificate gives the Air Navigation (Aircraft Engine Emissions) Regulations a two-year stay of execution.

Under Australian law, most regulations automatically expire (this is called "sunsetting") after 10 years unless they're remade or extended. These particular regulations about aircraft engine pollution were due to sunset (expire) on 1 April 2019. This certificate pushes that expiry date back to 1 April 2021.

Who it affects: Airlines, aircraft operators, and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), who must continue following the existing emissions rules until April 2021.

Why it matters: It prevents a regulatory gap where aircraft emissions would go unregulated while the government decides whether to remake, amend, or scrap the rules. The certificate itself disappears on 2 April 2021, the day after the regulations finally sunset.
