Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This is legislative housekeeping—synchronising the use-by dates on two sets of broadcasting rules so they expire together like milk and bread bought on the same shopping trip.

The rules affected:

Broadcasting Services (Australian Content) Standard 2016 – the rules forcing commercial TV networks to broadcast minimum amounts of Australian drama, documentaries and children's programs
Children's Television Standards 2009 – the safeguards setting content requirements and advertising limits for children's television

The change: Both rules now automatically expire ("sunset") on 1 October 2021. The declaration itself self-destructs the next day (2 October 2021)—mission accomplished, no loose ends.

Why bother? Aligning the sunset dates lets the government review and remake both schemes in one go, rather than death by a thousand consultations. For broadcasters and content makers, it means one deadline to watch instead of two scattered across different years.
