What it does
This Act, the Justice and Related Legislation (Miscellaneous Amendments) Act 2024 (short title at s 1), makes a set of amendments to five principal Acts by Parts rather than reproducing amendment schedules in the body of the instrument. Mechanically the Act:
- Declares its short title: Justice and Related Legislation (Miscellaneous Amendments) Act 2024 (s 1).
- States commencement rules: except as provided, provisions commence on the day the Act receives Royal Assent (s 2(1)); Part 2 (the Coroners Act 1995 amendments) commences on a day or days to be proclaimed (s 2(2)).
- Provides a built‑in sunset for the Act itself: the Act is repealed on the first anniversary of the day on which the last uncommenced provision of the Act commenced (s 3).
- Divides the amending content into Parts that target existing legislation: Part 2 (Coroners Act 1995), Part 3 (Criminal Code Act 1924), Part 4 (Legal Profession Act 2007), Part 5 (Police Offences Act 1935) and Part 6 (Variation of Trusts Act 1994). Each of those Parts contains short provisions that state the amendments effected by that Part “have been incorporated into the authorised version” of the relevant principal Act (see, for example, the opening declaration in Part 2, s 4, and the repetition in ss 5-10; similarly for Parts 3-6 in the listed sections).
- Does not reproduce the operative amendment text within the printed provisions provided here. Instead it records that the amendments have been incorporated into the authorised versions of the principal Acts (that wording recurs in multiple sections across Parts 2-6).
The Act thus performs procedural amendment functions: it alters other statutes but, as enacted in the text supplied, does not set out the substantive amendment language in this instrument. For timing, the bulk of the Act takes effect on Royal Assent; Part 2 requires proclamation. For lifespan, the Act will lapse one year after the last uncommenced provision commences, per s 3. Practitioners must therefore look to the authorised versions of the principal Acts named in the Parts to see the precise drafting changes and to confirm commencement dates beyond what this Act records.
