Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Act gives the federal government legal authority to spend £19 million on pension payments. It transfers money from Australia’s main government bank account (the Consolidated Revenue Fund) into a special holding account called the Invalid and Old-age Pensions Fund.

What it does:

Authorises payment of age pensions (for elderly Australians) and invalid pensions (for people with disabilities)
Creates the legal basis for the government to spend this specific amount

Why it matters: The Australian Constitution prevents the government from spending public money without specific parliamentary approval. This Act provides that approval for one year’s worth of pension payments. Without this law, Centrelink’s predecessor couldn’t legally pay pensions to eligible recipients.
