Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Act gives formal approval for Australia to join the International Wheat Agreement of 1959, an international treaty signed in Washington on 24 April 1959.

What it does:

Approves the treaty: Allows Australia to formally accept the 1959 Agreement under international law (specifically Article 35 of that Agreement).
Updates the law: Repeals (cancels) the previous International Wheat Agreement Act 1956, replacing it with this new approval for the updated 1959 Agreement.

Who it affects: This primarily affects the Australian Government's trade negotiators and wheat exporters. By passing this law, Parliament authorises Australia to participate in international wheat trade arrangements under the 1959 treaty, which likely set prices, quotas, or trade rules for wheat between member countries.

Why it matters: It ensures Australia can legally participate in international wheat markets under the new 1959 rules rather than the outdated 1956 agreement.
