Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Act gives parliamentary approval for Australia to formally join (ratify) an international treaty about sugar.

What it does:

Approves Australia's ratification of the International Sugar Agreement of 1968, a United Nations treaty designed to stabilize world sugar prices and regulate international trade in sugar
Gives legal authority for the Australian Government to become a party to the Agreement under Article 60 of that treaty

Who it affects:

The Australian Government, enabling it to participate in international sugar trade frameworks
Australian sugar producers and exporters, by allowing Australia to join the international system for managing sugar supply and pricing

Why it matters: Without this domestic legislation, Australia could not formally ratify the international treaty, which would exclude Australian sugar from the agreed international trading arrangements and price stabilization mechanisms.
