Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This instrument updates the protection rules for Mawson's Huts Historic Site—a historic Antarctic expedition base in East Antarctica.

What it does:

Revokes the previous management plan (which covered 2007-2012)
Replaces it with a new five-year plan (covering 2013-2018)

Why it matters: Mawson's Huts are protected under two heritage registers:

The National Heritage List (for places of outstanding national significance)
The Commonwealth Heritage List (for places owned or controlled by the Australian Government)

Under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, any place on these lists must have a management plan setting out how its heritage values will be protected, maintained, and monitored. This instrument swaps the expired plan for the new one, ensuring continuous legal protection for the site.

The new plan takes effect the day after this document is officially registered as a legislative instrument.
