Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This instrument repeals (cancels) the Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) Guidelines that previously limited how much government-subsidised university study a student could access.

What it does:

Removes the administrative rules that enforced the SLE cap—a system that restricted students to roughly 7 years of equivalent full-time Commonwealth-supported study (such as HECS-HELP subsidised degrees).
Practical effect: Students are no longer restricted by the SLE limit when accessing government-subsidised university places. You can now study beyond the previous cap and still receive Commonwealth support (though other academic progress rules still apply).

Who it affects:

Current and future university students accessing Commonwealth-supported places.
Higher education providers no longer need to track students’ remaining SLE balance.

Why it matters: It effectively abolishes the "7-year limit" on subsidised study, allowing lifelong learning and career changes without losing government tuition subsidies.
