Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document is a formal proclamation that switches on part of an existing law. It sets 1 January 2012 as the date when Schedule 1 of the Higher Education Legislation Amendment (Student Services and Amenities) Act 2011 takes effect.

What this means: From this date, Australian universities and higher education providers were allowed to start charging students a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). This fee funds non-academic campus services such as:

Sporting, recreational, and cultural activities
Childcare and financial advice
Career counseling and student advocacy
Employment services and debating clubs

Without this proclamation, the law would have remained inactive. This document simply flips the switch to make it operational.
