Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: These regulations remove (repeal) the Great Barrier Reef Region (Prohibition of Mining) Regulations 1999.

Why it matters:

This is statute book housekeeping. The 1999 regulations banned mining in the Great Barrier Reef Region, but that ban has been moved into the main Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 (via the 2008 Amendment Act).
Because the prohibition now lives in the primary legislation (the Act), the separate 1999 regulations are redundant.
Nothing changes for miners or environmental protections—the mining ban still applies, just under the main Act rather than separate regulations.

Who it affects: Mining companies, environmental regulators, and anyone dealing with resource rights in the Reef region. For practical purposes, this simply tidies up the legal paperwork without altering the underlying ban.
