Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This 1933 law provided emergency financial relief to apple and pear growers who lost money exporting their fruit during the Great Depression.

What it does

The Commonwealth Government gave fixed cash grants to each State (ranging from £478 in Queensland to £63,800 in Tasmania)
States had to pass this money on to "necessitous" (needy) fruit growers who could prove they suffered losses exporting apples or pears during the 1932-1933 season

Who it affected

Specifically apple and pear growers who exported fruit in 1932-1933 and lost money
The narrow definition of "fruit growers" in this Act only includes these two types of growers

Why it mattered

This was Depression-era relief to help struggling farmers who had been hit by collapsed export markets
The different amounts per State reflect where apple and pear growing was concentrated (Tasmania and Victoria received the largest shares)
