Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document is an official commencement proclamation. It simply sets the date when Schedule 1 of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Amendment Act 2010 starts operating: 1 March 2011.

Think of Parliament as having already passed these amendments, but leaving the "on switch" to be flipped later. This proclamation flips that switch. Until this date was officially announced, those particular changes to food standards law sat dormant, even though they had already been approved.

The proclamation was made by the Administrator of the Government (acting for the Governor-General) under a specific power in the original Act that allowed this timing to be set by executive decision rather than happening automatically.
