This Act has been repealed and is no longer in force. It is retained for historical reference.
This instrument sets Australia's total catch limit (quota) for Southern Bluefin Tuna for the 2023–24 fishing season.
What it does:
Why it matters: Southern Bluefin Tuna is a highly valuable but vulnerable species managed under international conservation agreements. Australia negotiates a national allocation each year to ensure the fishery remains sustainable. This legal instrument formally declares that allocation for the season, giving fishers certainty about how much they can legally catch and helping prevent overfishing of the stock.
Legal context: This determination is made under the Fisheries Management Act 1991 and the Southern Bluefin Tuna Fishery Management Plan 1995, which establish the framework for managing this fishery.
