Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does This order increases the amount of Deepwater flathead (a type of fish) that commercial fishers are allowed to catch in the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery.

Key details

Old limit: 1,300 tonnes for the 2009 fishing year
New limit: 1,400 tonnes (an increase of 100 tonnes)
Who it affects: Commercial fishers operating under the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery Management Plan
Who made it: The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), using powers under the Fisheries Management Act 1991

Why this matters This allows the fishing industry to catch an extra 100 tonnes of Deepwater flathead during the 2009 season. "Total Allowable Catch" (or TAC) is the legal cap on how much of a specific fish species can be caught to prevent overfishing and keep the fishery sustainable.
