sch.2-sec.117 Escape hole requirements
The escape hole must allow turtles to escape immediately after the turtles are taken in the net. The escape hole must consist of— a horizontal cut that is— at the trailing edge of the escape hole and immediately in front of and parallel to the trailing edge of the grid; and at least 610mm wide; and no narrower than the grid, other than for 100mm at either side of the grid; and 2 cuts that are each— in front of and perpendicular to the trailing edge of the grid; and of equal length; and at least 660mm long if the escape hole is covered with a single flap, or at least 510mm long if the escape hole is covered with a double flap; and a leading edge cut that, when the net is stretched, is at least— if the escape hole is covered with a single flap—1,810mm; or if the escape hole is covered with a double flap—1,420mm. Alternatively, the escape hole may consist of— a horizontal cut that is— at the trailing edge of the escape hole and immediately in front of and parallel to the trailing edge of the grid; and at least 1,020mm wide; and 2 all bar cuts that each— are of equal length and at least 1,360mm long; and taper from either end of the horizontal cut mentioned in paragraph (a) to where the cuts meet. Alternatively, the escape hole may consist of— a horizontal cut that is— at the trailing edge of the escape hole and immediately in front of and parallel to the trailing edge of the grid; and at least 610mm wide; and no narrower than the grid, other than for 100mm at either side of the grid; and 2 cuts that are each— in front of and perpendicular to the trailing edge of the grid; and of equal length; and at least 660mm long if the escape hole is covered with a single flap, or at least 510mm long if the escape hole is covered with a double flap; and 2 all bar cuts that— each intersect with, and are in front of, the perpendicular cuts mentioned in paragraph (b) ; and are each of equal length and at least 500mm long; and allow the escape hole, at the intersections mentioned in subparagraph (i) , to stretch to, if the escape hole is covered with a single flap, 1,810mm, or if the escape hole is covered with a double flap, 1,420mm. In this section— all bar cut means a cut through parallel opposing bars in a row of meshes. sch 2 s 117 prev sch 2 s 117 om 2020 SL No. 236 s 16 (6) pres sch 2 s 117 ins 2020 SL No. 236 s 159 (sch.2-sec.117-ssec.1) The escape hole must allow turtles to escape immediately after the turtles are taken in the net.
