144 Number plates to be kept in safe custody (1) The sheriff or the police officer must keep any number plates removed from a motor vehicle under section 140 in safe custody. (2) Despite anything to the contrary in the **Road Safety Act 1986**, it is not an offence against that Act to leave a vehicle whose registration has been suspended under section 143 standing on a highway. S. 145 (Heading) substituted by No. 59/2017 s. 89.
