Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This rule changes how Military Staff Clerks (administrative workers in the armed forces) are paid and what employment benefits they receive.

What it does:

It scraps the old pay rules for these clerks and replaces them with the same pay scales, promotion increments, allowances, and moving expenses that apply to clerks in the ordinary Commonwealth Public Service.
Who approves the payments: While regular public service clerks need sign-off from the Governor-General or the Public Service Commissioner for certain decisions, Military Staff Clerks only need approval from the Defence Minister.

Why it matters: This brings military administrative staff into line with civilian government workers for salary and conditions, while keeping the Defence Minister (rather than public service bosses) in control of these military appointments.
