Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is a commencement proclamation—a legal instrument that switches on parts of another law. It sets 1 July 2006 as the date when Schedules 1 and 2 of the Family Law Amendment (Shared Parental Responsibility) Act 2006 become legally effective.

What this means:

Before this date: The family law reforms contained in those Schedules were passed by Parliament but not yet active.
After this date: The changes (primarily introducing a presumption of equal shared parental responsibility for separated parents) became legally enforceable.
Who activated it: Professor Marie Bashir (Administrator of the Commonwealth, acting on the Governor-General’s behalf) and the Attorney-General, using the power granted by subsection 2(1) of the parent Act.

This document does not change the law itself; it simply triggers the start date for reforms already decided by Parliament.
