Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document is a formal legal notice (a proclamation) that sets 21 October 2011 as the start date for a specific appeal pathway in family law.

What it does:

Allows the Family Court of Australia to begin hearing appeals from certain Western Australian family law cases
Specifically covers appeals from decisions made by Western Australian magistrates (lower court judges) under section 94AAA of the Family Law Act

Why it matters: Western Australia has its own separate state-based family court system, unlike the rest of Australia. This proclamation ensures that when WA magistrates make decisions under the federal Family Law Act, parties have the right to appeal those decisions to the federal Family Court. Before this date, that specific appeal route wasn't available.
