Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document is a formal commencement proclamation—a legal notice that switches on specific parts of the Fair Work Amendment Act 2012.

What it does: It sets 1 January 2013 as the date when Schedules 3 to 8 of the Fair Work Amendment Act 2012 come into force (become legally effective).

Why this matters: When Parliament passes a law, the provisions often don’t start working immediately. Instead, the Governor-General must formally "proclaim" (announce) the start date. Without this document, the workplace law changes contained in those six schedules would remain dormant and unenforceable.

Who is affected: Employers, employees, and unions covered by the Fair Work Act 2009—specifically anyone impacted by the amendments contained in Schedules 3 through 8 (which typically cover areas like industrial action rules, Fair Work Commission powers, or workplace rights, depending on the content of those specific schedules).
