Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This legal instrument sets the total amount of Southern Bluefin Tuna that Australian commercial fishers are allowed to catch during the 2017–2018 fishing season.

Key points:

The quota: Australian fishers can catch up to 6,165,000 kilograms (about 6,165 tonnes) of Southern Bluefin Tuna.
When it applies: From 1 December 2017 to 30 November 2018.
Who sets it: The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), the government body that manages Commonwealth fisheries.
Why it matters: Southern Bluefin Tuna swim across international waters, so Australia negotiates a national share of the total global catch to prevent overfishing. This document formally allocates that share to Australian fishers for the season.
Automatic expiry: The rule automatically stops on 1 December 2018 unless cancelled earlier.

In simple terms, this is the official 'budget' for how much of this specific fish Australia can take from the ocean that year.
