Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Determination makes holders of certain provisional or temporary partner visas subject to the newly arrived resident’s waiting period (typically up to four years) before they can claim Special Benefit, a Centrelink payment for severe financial hardship.

That means many people sponsored by an Australian partner—if their relationship breaks down or they face immediate hardship after arrival—generally cannot access Special Benefit until the waiting period ends.
