Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does This declaration stops Australian businesses from claiming Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) for any promotional activities targeting North Korea.

How the scheme normally works The EMDG program usually reimburses businesses for costs like:

Overseas trade shows and exhibitions
Marketing campaigns and advertising
Travel to meet potential international buyers
Free samples and promotional materials

Who it affects Any Australian business seeking government support to develop markets in North Korea (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea). By declaring North Korea as a country "subject to trade sanctions," this instrument automatically excludes all North Korea-related promotional spending from grant eligibility.

Why it matters This ensures Australia's trade assistance aligns with its foreign policy and international sanctions obligations. Businesses must self-fund any market development activities in North Korea without taxpayer support.
