Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document is a ministerial priority list that tells Australia's environmental scientists which threatened species and ecosystems should be assessed first.

Under the main environment law (the EPBC Act), the Threatened Species Scientific Committee assesses nominations to add plants, animals, and ecological communities to Australia's official 'threatened' lists. Because they cannot assess everything at once, the Minister sets conservation themes to guide their workload.

For the assessment period starting 1 October 2009, the two priority themes were:

Coastal environments — including land, estuaries, and near-shore marine areas around Australia's coasts; and
Inland water systems — including rivers, wetlands, and ecosystems that depend on underground water sources.

Why this matters: If a species or ecosystem fell into one of these categories, its nomination for listing as 'threatened' would be assessed before others. This directed limited scientific and administrative resources to areas the Minister considered most urgent at that time.
