Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This document sets a priority focus for Australia's threatened species listing process. Under national environmental law (the EPBC Act), anyone can nominate a species, ecosystem, or threatening process to be officially listed as "threatened" — a status that triggers legal protections. Because there are limited resources to assess these nominations, the Minister can set a "conservation theme" to prioritise certain types of nominations over others.

Who it affects: Environmental groups, scientists, and state governments making nominations for species protection, plus the Threatened Species Scientific Committee which assesses them.

Why it matters: For the assessment period starting 1 October 2008, the government prioritised species and ecosystems that depend on rivers, wetlands, and groundwater in inland Australia. This meant nominations fitting this theme were assessed before others, ensuring urgent attention to water-dependent wildlife during the severe Millennium Drought.
