This declaration names four major social media platforms as "tier 2 social media services" under the Enhancing Online Safety for Children Act 2015.
The platforms covered are:
Being classified as a "tier 2" service brings these companies under specific legal obligations designed to protect children online. These obligations include requirements to take down harmful cyberbullying material when notified and to cooperate with the eSafety Commissioner (the government regulator for online safety).
Why this matters: This declaration ensures these specific platforms must comply with Australian online safety laws, giving the eSafety Commissioner power to enforce standards for responding to serious cyberbullying affecting Australian children.
