Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This document is a commencement proclamation—a formal legal instrument that switches on specific parts of the Electoral and Referendum Amendment (Modernisation and Other Measures) Act 2010.

What it does:

Sets 23 July 2010 as the date when Schedules 5 and 7 of the Act come into legal force
Activates specific electoral law reforms that were passed by Parliament but needed this official "start date" to become operational

Who made it:

Signed by Marie Bashir, the Administrator of the Government (acting in the Governor-General's role)
Made with advice from the Federal Executive Council

Why it matters: Australian Acts often pass Parliament but lie dormant until a proclamation sets a start date. Without this document, the reforms in Schedules 5 and 7 would remain inactive. This is the legal "on switch."
