What these rules do

These regulations specify which Australian territories are covered by the Domicile Act 1982.

What is 'domicile'? In Australian law, your 'domicile' is essentially your permanent legal home. It determines which country's laws apply to your personal affairs (like marriage, divorce, and inheritance), even if you don't currently live there.

The practical effect The regulations declare that the Domicile Act applies to three external Australian territories:

Christmas Island
Cocos (Keeling) Islands
Norfolk Island

This means people with connections to these islands are subject to the same rules about legal residence as mainland Australians.
