Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this document does

This is a formal budget adjustment that cuts $15 million from the Attorney-General's Department funding.

Key details

Who: Finance Minister Nick Minchin approved a request from Attorney-General Philip Ruddock
What: Reducing an 'equity injection' (capital funding) originally provided in the 2000-2001 budget
Why: The department requested the reduction, likely because it no longer needed the funds
Legal basis: Section 12 of the Appropriation Act (No. 4) 2003-2004

Why this matters

This shows the formal process for government departments to return unspent money to the budget. Rather than holding onto taxpayer funds they don't need, departments can ask the Finance Minister to formally cancel the allocation.
