Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This instrument sets the mileage reimbursement rate for defence force members and veterans who need to travel by car to receive medical treatment or rehabilitation services under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act.

What it does:

Sets the payment at 60 cents per kilometre travelled
Replaces an earlier 2004 rate set by the previous Veterans' Affairs Minister
Applies to travel claims for medical appointments, treatment, or rehabilitation

Who it affects:

Current and former Australian Defence Force members claiming travel costs
Their families (in some circumstances)

Timing note: Although signed on 13 October 2008, the rate applies retrospectively from 1 October 2008. This means anyone who travelled between those dates and submitted a claim would receive the 60 cent rate, not the previous rate.
