Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This declaration gives Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served in Operation TAMAR (the 1994–1996 Rwanda peacekeeping mission) access to special home loan benefits.

Under the Defence Force (Home Loans Assistance) Act 1990, members can receive financial assistance for buying homes, but only if their service is classified as "warlike service". This instrument officially declares that service in Operation TAMAR meets that criteria.

Key details:

Who is covered: ADF members allotted for duty on Operation TAMAR
When: 25 July 1994 to 16 January 1996
Where: Rwanda, plus areas within 50 kilometres of Rwanda's border in Uganda, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), Burundi, and Tanzania

This allows eligible veterans and service members to claim home loan assistance for their service during the Rwandan genocide and subsequent stabilization period.
