Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This declaration officially recognises that Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who served in Operation Husky in Sierra Leone between 15 January 2001 and 28 February 2003 were engaged in "warlike service".

Why this matters: Under the Defence Force (Home Loans Assistance) Act 1990, only service classified as "warlike" (as opposed to peacetime or non-warlike service) qualifies members for special home loan benefits, including subsidies and assistance schemes to help buy a home.

Who is affected:

ADF members who were officially allotted (assigned) to Operation Husky
Who served in Sierra Leone during the specified two-year period

The practical effect: Eligible veterans can access the Home Loans Assistance Scheme, which helps with interest payments on home loans. This declaration was made in 2007 but applies retroactively to cover service rendered during 2001–2003.
