Tasmania regulation
This Order fixes the monetary cap for defamation damages. From 1 July 2006, the "maximum damages amount" used under section 35(1) of the Defamation Act 2005 is declared to be $259,500.
The change affects people bringing or defending defamation claims by limiting the highest compensatory award a court may apply under that provision; it sets only a numeric ceiling and does not alter the substantive tests for liability or defences in the Act.
