Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

This 1987 declaration makes Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal traditional inhabitants require a licence when catching prawns by boat in the designated prawn fishery area, creating an exception to the usual “community fishing” licence exemption. It matters because it brings subsistence boat-based prawn harvests under formal regulation and enforcement to help monitor and sustain prawn stocks.
