Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this law does: This Act creates a one-off government compensation scheme for people who lost property in Cyclone Tracy, which devastated Darwin on Christmas Day 1974.

Key points:

Who it helps: People who suffered loss or damage to property (homes, belongings, land) because of the cyclone.
Who decides: The Minister can authorize payments and set the rules for who qualifies and how much they receive.
Where the money comes from: Parliament must appropriate (set aside) the funds.
Accountability: The Minister had to report to Parliament about payments made during the 1974-75 and 1975-76 financial years.

Why it matters: This allowed the federal government to quickly get money to disaster victims without needing to pass new legislation for every individual payment.
