Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Act validates customs duties that were collected under proposed tariff changes introduced into the House of Representatives on 22 August 1929.

What it does:

Declares that any customs duties demanded or collected under these "Tariff proposals" are deemed to have been lawfully imposed and collected
Covers collections made up to 20 December 1929
Applies regardless of whether the House of Representatives dissolved or expired during this period

Why it matters: Normally, customs duties can only be collected after Parliament passes a formal Act. However, governments sometimes start collecting duties based on "proposals" (temporary tariff changes announced by the Minister) before they become full law. This Act backdates legal authority to cover any duties collected under the August 1929 proposals between their introduction and 20 December 1929, preventing legal challenges against those collections.
