What it does
This Determination sets the physical specifications that are to apply, for the purposes of subsection 13A(1) of the Currency Act 1965, to particular Australian coins listed in Part 1 of Schedule 1. Section 4(1) states that, on and after the day this Determination commences, each item in Part 1 specifies, for a coin having the denomination and standard composition mentioned in the item, the coin’s standard weight, the allowable variation from that standard weight, the coin’s dimensions, and the coin’s design. Section 3 defines the Act referred to as the Currency Act 1965. Section 4(2) expressly preserves any other determinations of these attributes made under subsection 13A(1) of the Act, saying this Determination does not affect other determinations.
Mechanically, the Determination performs four actions. First, it records standard compositions for particular items: for example, 50 cent pieces in copper and nickel, and 50 cent pieces in not less than 99.9% silver. Second, it records numerical weights and an allowable variation for each listed item (for example, entry 1: 50c, copper and nickel, standard weight "15.55 ± 0.40" grams). Third, it records maximum diameter and maximum thickness in millimetres for each item (for example, entry 4: $1, copper, aluminium and nickel, maximum diameter 25.20 mm and maximum thickness 3.00 mm). Fourth, it links each listed item to a set of design and form symbols (shape, edge, obverse, reverse) that are explained in Part 2.
The Part 1 table includes four numbered items, two entries for the 50 cent denomination (items 1 and 2) and two entries for the $1 denomination (items 3 and 4), each with different standard composition, mass and dimension figures. Part 2 provides the mapping of symbol codes used in Part 1 to literal meanings: for example S1 means dodecagonal, S2 circular, E1 plain edge, O1 an obverse bearing an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with specified inscriptions, and R1-R3 different reverse designs (including commemorative motifs and a bullion specification "1 oz .999 Ag" in R2). The Determination does not contain penalties, administrative procedures, or commencement date text inside the excerpt provided; section 4(1) refers to "the day on which this Determination commences", but the particular commencement date is not set out in this text.
